A Simple Wing Tutorial

I hope you enjoy this wing tutorial by Rosanna Pereyra of Rosannasart.blogspot.com
I'm already thinking about how great this would be to add wings to a fairy in an assemblage!
Thank you Rosanna!

Meet Rosanna Pereyra

One of the perks of doing custom banners for people is that I get to meet an array of talented artists and make new friends I might otherwise never have the opportunity to know. One such person is Rosanna Pereyra who in my book is a sculptor extraordinaire. I met Rosanna when she approached me about making a banner for her blog incorporating pieces of her artwork into the design.

When she sent me the images she wanted to use I honestly admit to being blown away and I sat in front of the computer with goosebumps. I think that when you see the photos, read Rosanna's words and vist her blog you too will be blown away by this lovely sculptor who is mostly self-taught. Look into the eyes of her "people". I swear you can see their souls.

I know from your blog that you are originally from Uruguay and now reside in Miami. How did you get from there to here and how long have you been in the states?

I will give you the condensed version. There was "civil unrest" in Uruguay and Argentina in the late 60's through the late 70's. Our government was headed in a direction that my family didn't agree with and decided it would be best if we left the country. My father managed to get Visas from the U.S. Embassy and in 1979 we arrived in Miami. I have also lived in beautiful Ottowa, Canada, but have not returned to Uruguay yet. One day soon, I would like to take my husband and kids to visit where I came from.

Your work is so stunningly beautiful to me and your talent shines though in all that you create. Did you study art at school, or are you mostly a self-taught artist?

Thank you, that means a lot to me. I am mostly a self taught artist. Sometimes I do ask my artist friends how they would do something and I love to get together and watch others create because it helps me understand a new process or technique.

Do you have a special spot in the house that is just for you when you create?

I sure do! I took over half of the converted garage. I added bookcases as walls, painted the concrete floor, and turned it into a tiny little studio for myself. I also have an old desk with a bookcase that houses my collections of things I love to look at.

What inspires you when you are creating?

Everything and anything! I can be inspired by a dream, a piece of fabric, a song, a book, a movie or a picture. Then I begin to gather the pictures, fabrics, objects and materials to complete the look of my idea. I put it all together on an inspiration board and work from that.

I love all your work that I have seen but I found I seem to have a special affinity for Ms. Whisolbautum because of her story. Your talent for words is as great as your talent for sculpting. Do you plan to write a book?

I love her, and I have a feeling people like her because they either know some sweet soul like her or they can see a little of her quirkiness in themselves. I really enjoy writing and have written several short stories. I am currently working on getting one of those stories published as a children's book. (fingers crossed).

Will you share a little with us about your "girls" and the "orphans"?

The girls are a manifestation of a moment in time. A beautiful, magical, yet often fragile moment where we are neither child nor adult. It's that moment when your mind told your heart that life was not a fairytale but your heart refused to believe it. I also love to make fairytale characters, fairies and mythological creatures.

Now the orphans are a different story. I was looking for a way to make funny characters that weren't too serious and combine that with my love of story telling. I found a great group of artists on EBAY that embodies that, MRSBO's Orphanage and the inspiration came from that.
Ms. Whisolbautum will be introducing her beloved orphans monthly so visit her whenever possible and don't stare at the children they will bite.

Thank you Rosanna! All images courtesy of Rosanna Pereyra. You can find Rosanna at her blog Fractured Fairytales . Rosanna is having a giveaway on her blog so if you leave her a comment you might possibly win one of her marvelous creations! And stay tuned because we will be putting up a small tutorial Rosanna has prepared for us here at Mind Wide Open.

Fragment of Thought

While we're waiting for our tutorial I wanted to share some thoughts on creativity I've been having lately.

In art we so often seem obsessed with our "mistakes" and let them freeze us up, instead of seeing them as a learning tool that we should take by the hand and walk with side by side on our art journey. We seem to put ourseves in the position that if we don't "get it right" the first, second or third time out, then there is something wrong with us as an artist. We often feel we want to call it quits and feel discouraged as we berate ourselves with the mantra "I'm not an artist, I"m not an artist".

And yet do we expect the same thing from say, a musician? Do we expect that person to sit down at the piano, doodle around with a few notes and then play us a beautiful song? Do we expect someone to pick up a flute and even produce noise on their first few attempts (a flautist has to know how to breathe correctly to begin their journey to beautiful music). Muscians know they must play through their mistakes....over and over and over again...until those notes become a memory to their fingers, not their brain.

So why do we expect less of ourselves? Why do we let those "mistakes" turn us away, when we should be thankful that they are training us? Because that is what mistakes do. They train us to find what works for us. And who is to say a "mistake" is always a mistake. Just because something didn't go the way you expected it to, or wanted it to, doesn't mean it didn't go the way it was supposed to go. And maybe the way it went, was the path you were meant to follow. Hmmm?

The Votes are Late but They're Counted!

We started off the year with a bang and gorgeous, beautiful artwork entries. And so our voters as usual had difficult choices to make but we managed to get a winner and 2 runner ups. Our first winner of the year is Nicole Gibson-Rice of http://gibbysgirl.livejournal.com/ and following neck in neck were Tina Wilson of http://www.gardengoose.blogspot.com/ and Pat Winter of http://gatherings100.blogspot.com/. I"ll be getting in touch with all three of you about your prizes.

So dear ones, I thank each and every one of you who stopped and took some time to create, who stepped out of their comfort zone and bravely entered their works of beauty. It is each and every one of you who make Mind Wide Open!

Time to Vote!

So. We're already into the new year and I would suppose most people are back to their normal life as opposed to their holiday life. I am a bit late today in getting entries up as it has been chaos at the shabby cottage this week and I'm not one of those people who do well with chaos. It scatters me in too many directions and scatters my concentration.

We have some new faces this month and that thrills me! I know for some of you this is your first step out in public like this and that you are nervous. But I stand and applaud you. Because you did step out. Because that required an act of bravery. And brave women are always winners in my book. So be proud of yourselves.

If you have sent in an entry and have not posted it on your blog (and you have a blog) I encourage you to do so and add a link to this post so people can come and vote for you! Time will not allow me to do proper credit here with all the wonderful descriptions and titles so take the time to add them to your blog. People love to read about the artwork!

If you are a voter, please, take some time and visit the links we have posted...you may find some grand new artists to add to your fave list!

If I missed anything, an entry, a blog address, a misspelling of a name, please let me know and I will happily correct it. If you have sent in more than one image it is at my discretion as to whether I post one or two of them. I know some of you have blogs but I did not receive them with the entry and since I don't keep entries from month to month (gotta save room of the ole hard drive) I don't have them, so send the link to me and I'll add it. :-)

The voting rules are simple.
1. Only one vote person.
2. Voting must be contained to this post only or it will not be counted. The other way to vote is to send me an email at shabby@lgschmidt.net
3. Artists may vote for themselves.
4.Voting ends at midnight Jan. 14, 2009 and winners will be posted Jan 15, 2009.

If you are not sure how to vote on the blog it is very easy:
Scroll to the bottom of this post. You will see a number in front of the word Comments (ie: 12 Comments) in tiny letters. Click on it and a dialog box will open where you can leave your comment.

Winner with the most votes wins a $20.00 shopping spree with free shipping at Shabby Cottage Studio and two runners up recevie a free collage sheet of their choice.

So without further ado, here are our entries for the Jan. Challenge Contest. Our word prompt was Forever and the word could be used in the artwork but is not required.

First Challenge of 2009!

Happy New Year everybody! I'm sending everyone wishes of health, wealth and good cheer for the coming year. I am also wishing you a wonderful creative journey this year filled with discoveries, happy mistakes and serendipitous happenings!

To start the creative new year off right we are issuing our first Challenge Contest of 2009. If you're new to Mind Wide Open we welcome you with open arms and hugs and hope you join in the fun of the challenge. Our goal is to motivate you to find time just for you and your creative muse and to challenge yourself to maybe step beyond your normal creative boundaries. It doesn't matter what medium you work in, mixed media, painting, sewing, textiles etc...we don't care! We just want everyone to have fun and create!

The rules are simple. You must use the image provided, in your creation. The word prompt provided can be used in your work or not...it is to be used for your inspiration, along with the image. The contest ends midnight Jan 7, west coast, east coast or in between coast time, wherever you reside. Your images are to be emailed to shabby@lgschmidt.net. PLEASE, I ask that you make sure you send me jpeg images. I will post all image entries Jan. 8 and the voting will be opened at that time. The winner receives a $20.00 shopping spree with free shipping at Shabby Cottage Studio and an interview posted here on the blog by our fabulous interviewer Sherry Smyth of Esprit*d'art. Two runners up will receive a free collage sheet of their choice also from Shabby Cottage Studio. And I always say, the prizes are simply the motivator, not the goal. :-) The goal is... time for you, fun, and enjoying art!

All that being said here is your image and the word prompt this month is..."Forever".

Happy Creating!
